Sue Maton – In loving memory

Sue Maton, founder of The Mercerie sadly passed away on 16 March 2026 after a short battle with an aggressive form of dementia.

Sue Maton – 19 June 1966 – 16 March 2026

We are devastated that Sue has been taken from us so young by such a cruel illness, and coming to terms with this is immensely difficult for us all.

A celebration of Sue’s life was held on 9 April 2026 in her home city of Norwich.  The room was full of friends, family and people who knew and loved Sue.  The service was beautiful and we know many of you would have loved to have been there.  We’re sure many of you held Sue in your thoughts on the day, wherever you were.

A few close crochet friends, worked together to create a collection of beautiful, colourful crochet stars for the service.  It was suggested that guests choose and take a star home to remember Sue.

We’d like to share this pattern with you, and if you feel you’d like to – perhaps make some of these stars to hang in your own home and think of Sue too.

Here’s the pattern for anyone wishing to make some:

– Using any 4 ply cotton yarn and a 3mm hook –

Rnd 1: Ch4.  Join with a sl st to the first chain to create a ring. Ch2 (counts as first htr) 2htr into centre of the ring. *Ch1, 3htr into centre of the ring. Repeat from * 3 more times.  Join with a sl st to the 2nd chain. (15 htr)

Rnd 2: sl st into previous 1ch sp *Ch 6. Dc into 3rd chain from the hook, htr into 4th chain, tr into 5th chain, dtr into 6th chain.  Sl st to the next 1ch space.  Repeat from *4 more times.

(pull thread through to the back before sewing in to create a neat join)

We’d like to share one of the readings which was include in the service, titled ‘Feel No Guilt In Laughter’:

Feel no guilt in laughter, she’d know how much you care.

Feel no sorrow in a smile that she’s not here to share.

You cannot grieve forever; she would not want you to.

She’d hope that you could carry on the way you always do.

So talk about the good times and the way you showed you cared,

The days you spent together, all the happiness you shared.

Let memories surround you, a word someone may say

Will suddenly recapture a time, an hour, a day,

That brings her back as clearly as though she were still here,

And fills you with the feeling that she is always near.

For if you keep those moments, you will never be apart,

And she will live forever, locked safely in your heart.

We know many of you will want to reach out with messages of love and share your memories of Sue – please send these to support@themercerie.co.uk.

Sue recorded her thoughts and words regularly through her blog posts.  You may choose to revisit her posts, and smile as you hear her voice.

With the blessing of Sue’s family, The Mercerie will continue to deliver her courses – and share her work in her memory.

  1. So sad to hear of the sudden loss of Sue. My sincerest condolences to her family and friends.

I came across Sue’s designs through Pinterest and am amazed at how colourful and imaginative they are.

Like Sue, I love to push my crochet and knitting abilities with every project that I make, as well as playing with colour and shapes. So, I felt that I had found a kindred spirit in Sue.

I’m so pleased that her website and courses will continue as it is a fitting way to honour her memory and allow other like-minded people to experience her wonderful designs.

    Best wishes,
    Sophie

  2. Wow, such a shock, just reading this, I had been directed by the web in my search for 3D granny squares, to read this. My sympathy and compassion is sent out to family and friends.
